 The Character of Teak

Teak is a naturally durable hardwood, valued for its rich golden tones, distinctive grain and resistance to outdoor conditions. Its natural oils help protect the timber from moisture, making it a beautiful choice for outdoor furniture. At Block & Chisel, teak features in our Monaco, Zanzibar and St Tropez ranges. With simple, regular care, these pieces are designed to be enjoyed outdoors for years to come.

01

Everyday Care

  1. Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth or gentle brush, removing leaves and dirt from the timber's surface.
  2. Wipe spills promptly with a clean, absorbent cloth, particularly around dining and coffee tables.
  3. Clean when necessary using warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse gently with clean water and allow to dry completely.
  4. Remove bird droppings, tree sap and other organic matter as soon as possible to prevent staining. Ensure the timber is dry before replacing cushions or furniture covers.

02

Care by Finish

  • Natural, untreated teak: Teak can be left untreated outdoors, where it will gradually develop a soft silver-grey patina. Regular gentle cleaning is generally all that is required.
  • Maintaining the golden colour: If you prefer teak's original warm appearance, a suitable teak protector or sealer may be applied to clean, dry timber, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Sealed or painted finishes: Clean gently with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid applying teak oil over an existing coating. Follow the product-specific care instructions before refinishing.

03

Natural Weathering

  • Coastal areas: Rinse occasionally with fresh water to remove accumulated salt and surface deposits.
  • Shaded or humid spaces: Keep surfaces free from leaves and debris, and ensure good airflow to reduce moisture build-up and surface mildew.
  • Extended outdoor exposure: Use breathable furniture covers during long periods of non-use, and allow the timber to dry thoroughly before covering.
