Decorator of the Month
Taryn Flanagan
The desire to create and a deep curiosity are two driving forces behind Taryn Flanagan’s work as an interior decorator. From her base in Durban, she creates simple, livable and durable spaces that convey a sense of tranquility, relaxation and warmth. We find out more about her and why interiors are her first love.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
I come from a fashion background, and I suppose that interiors found me. I was in the fashion industry for 12 years, but always did creative things on the side. So, I got into interiors almost organically. My big break was when a friend gave me her home to decorate carte blanche and with full trust. From there my interior business has taken off.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
Texture is my main inspiration. I like to use pieces that are interesting and ones that tell a story. I like to mix natural objects with designed ones too. I suppose my style would be a modern colonial one with a touch of African flavour.
Q
Tell us about your latest project.
A
My current big one is a beautiful family homestead in northern Zululand. We are not at the decorating stage yet. The old Natal veranda home is getting walls taken down, and we have discovered the most beautiful old trusses underneath which we are wanting to use, as well as a fireplace chimney made from petrified wood. I also have a few home renovations that we are working on, so the rest of the year is packed full.
Q
What advice do you have for those of us who wish to redecorate?
A
Do it room by room. Finish a space first before you go onto the next one. Get your basics right as well. It’s easy to decorate on top of good basics, for example, curtains and nicely shaped couches. Know your decorating plan and scheme and stick to it.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
I ADORE the Theon lounge chair in charcoal.
Q
What is your favourite piece at home?
A
It is a very old King Louis chair that I inherited from my grandmother and have recovered.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Decorate with what you love. Let that be your starting point of inspiration.
