It was a natural progression from the world I was trained in. My early years were spent in the theatre, treading the boards and orchestra pits where I played furiously as a classical trumpeter before going under the baton of the great Gerard Du Toit where I studied opera. The study of the theatre arts and music gave me an intense understanding of period, style, structure, lighting and the art of dramatic effect. I guess really, it was interiors that chose me.

I pride myself in getting to know the psychology of my clients, taking the time to deeply understand their needs, desires and fantasies of which at times, they don't know themselves. From this information I create a style tailored to them. If I had to choose a style that I love most I guess it would be eclecticism. I believe that objects that resonate with oneself will always have a place. It's a bit like me, multifaceted, layered, or just mad - why be one style when you can be them all!

Travel. Finding new places that move me to an emotional level. Then getting lost in these places and discovering why. Film and the art of good storytelling is another. I resonate with the authentic be it a place a person or an object.

I’m currently working closely with the owners of a Johannesburg heritage home. I’m convinced it’s haunted and I find myself negotiating with the previous owners. It has all the makings of a Visconti film.

My advice has always been to anyone fixing up a house or simply wanting a fresh change is to invest in the shell. That is the floors and walls. Even just the walls. This will give you the mood you want and certainly save you a heck of a buck. Don't forget ambient lighting to bring this new mood through.

Oh, they simply all are favourites. Each one tells a story. No one piece is random. But if I had to choose one, it would have to be my Louis armchair: not upholstered, the horse hair falling out, the torn hessian and the odd bit of gilding reminding me of its former days. It's simply perfect.

What’s not to love? There’s something in how each piece relates to the other. It's Block & Chisel’s smalls that I enjoy most. Especially those with a sense of humor - the ceramic bulldog wearing a judge’s wig, is a good example. A sofa is a sofa but if you can make me smile....
