Jenny Humphrey creates harmony
Jenny Humphrey creates harmony
The talented Jenny Humphrey of Johannesburg-based interiors company J2HDI shares her insight into interior decor and how a love of fabric led her into a career in interiors.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
When I took over the running of a quaint little haberdashery called Rags to Riches in the Natal Midlands, I got my first exposure to the intricacies of fabrics. From there my love affair with all things colour and design expanded into curtaining and eventually into interiors and décor. Essentially, it was a natural progression in pursuit of my passion.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
I prefer to arrive at a unique look that's been tailormade for each client rather than imposing a trend or pre-dictated style. I achieve this by having an intuitive sense of our clients' personalities, tastes and individual needs, and interpreting this innovatively into beautiful yet practical design. I am always inspired by colour and texture.
Q
What advice do you have for those wanting to redecorate?
A
My advice would be to never do anything in half measure. Don't compromise. Rather, do the work in stages to achieve the desired end result holistically. Consider your budget carefully and work with these parameters in mind. And always consider your lifestyle and what you need out of a home to complement this.
Q
Tell us about your latest project?
A
We are currently busy with the complete refurbishment, design and decoration of an apartment in Sandhurst for our Mauritian client.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
My coffee table purchased many years ago from Italian decor store Casaredo. It is called The Architect's table.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at
Block & Chisel?
Block & Chisel?
A
I love the Camel Back Sofa upholstered in the teal velvet.
Q
Share your simplest décor tip.
A
The most important thing to achieve a holistic living space is to create harmony and balance through all five senses.
