Lanie van Reenen's unexpected talent

I was an occupational therapist but my heart wasn’t in it. I patch-worked the interior of our first house and discovered I had a talent for it. The patch-work became a home-industry, then a small shop which became a bigger shop and eventually we opened the first Biggie Best franchise in Constantia Village, down the road from Lynn McAdam’s original store. I went on to own and decorate several guest houses. These days I am a full-time decorator, specialising in hotel and guest house interiors.

I am inspired by beautiful architecture and enjoy working in a team consisting of owner, architect and other specialists. My style is classical with often a modern or funky twist. But I like to rise to the challenge of creating an interior that reflects the style and taste of my client while honouring the demands of the space.

Invest in quality pieces of furniture and art that will give you a lifetime of joy. Get a professional to curate and hang your art. Large scatter cushions in exquisite fabrics - large and always with feather/down inners - can add a jewel touch at relatively minimal cost.

I have recently been appointed as the aesthetic advisor for a hotel group – a wonderful opportunity and challenge.

A Block and Chisel cupboard made by Sibley McAdam, that I bought many, many years ago. It has since been painted red, has concealed lighting and houses my collection of white jugs.

The Wrigley 4 Leg Sofa/Console Table which I like for its timeless classical lines. A console table behind a sofa with one or two large lamps such as the Marina Lamp with Shade serves to demarcate the lounge area in a large open plan kitchen, dining and lounge space, and it can double up as a server for the dining area too.

I recently moved into a small house with very ugly cheap tiles through-out and replacing them was not an option. I painted the tiles with black stoep paint (two coats) after having washed them with sugar soap and applied the correct tile-sealer recommended by the paint dealer. It must be left to dry properly for at least two to three weeks - also for the smell to dissipate - but it is an inexpensive solution and yet creates a luxurious canvas for carpets, art and furniture.
