Havana: A Melting Pot of Style
They say that to walk through the streets of old Havana is akin to walking through several classic design eras in just a few moments. The city’s architecture was informed first by 16th and 17th Century Spanish style, crowned by elaborate roof detail not unlike Middle Eastern decoration. Several accounts from Dutch, English, Spanish and French visitors during this time mention that the city was painted in blues and greens.
Over the next three centuries, Havana’s style and colour only grew more varied. Stained glass windows, touches of glamorous Art Deco and even Modernist influences took hold. The result was a cultural melting pot that could only occur in a port town.
A City Frozen in Time
Cuba's famed run-in with the USA and its Cold War allies in the 1960s left it frozen in time for almost 50 years. Havana’s facade had relied on external influences for several centuries, but over the following decades, with limited access to much of the world and its resources, its vibrant colours would slowly fade and soften to a pastel patina. The result is a nostalgic snapshot of a glorious cultural melange.
