Decorator of the Month
Heather Boting
Fresh out of the limelight at Design Joburg, as well as having her latest styling shoot for House & Leisure featured on the cover of the May 2018 edition of the magazine, interior decorator Heather Boting brings a profound mixture of visual talent and practical know-how to her work. We get chatting to learn more about her approach to decor.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
My career in interiors has taken shape organically. I studied graphic design and obtained my degree in Visual Communication so it was a natural progression for me to enter the fashion and decor magazine industry. I spent 5 years as the decor stylist for leading decor magazine, House & Leisure, and throughout these years my passion for interiors really evolved, resulting in the start of my own interiors and styling consultancy.
Q
Do you have a specific style? What inspires you?
A
My style is classic contemporary. But I do think it is important to understand my client's particular aesthetic and translate that in each project. I like spaces to look sleek and neat, but I make sure that all the rooms in the home are casual with eclectic pieces that would be personal, inherited or found in interesting stores or travels. I also like to put emphasis on comfort. Since I gravitate towards the contemporary, I like my spaces to be defined by clean lines and a casual atmosphere.
Q
What advice do you have for our clients if they wish to redecorate?
A
Plan, plan, plan! Make sure you schedule your building contractors and suppliers on a realistic project timeline to avoid any unforeseen problems or delays. And seek advice and time from a professional. The redecorating process can be a very overwhelming one and often it’s great to have someone by your side to guide you in the right direction.
Q
Tell us about your latest project?
A
I'm currently working on a residential project where pops of colour and duco-painted furniture have been given a fresh lease of life. I've used classic linen on the beds and stunning local lighting throughout the home.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home and why?
A
My Firefly Lamp by De Padova and my Rain Taster sculpture by Frank van Reenen.
Q
What is your current favourite Block & Chisel piece?
A
The Lillian Drinks Cabinet. I would love to have a station dedicated to displaying and keeping all my glassware, drinks and decanters; a space to make a welcome cocktail and then close the doors at the end of the evening so everything is all neat and tidy.
Q
Share your simplest decor tip.
A
Add fresh greenery to your space. It's very important to bring the outdoors in when you are a city dweller. I love to start my week with a visit to the green grocer and florist for some oversized leaves and beautiful seasonal flowers.
