Sue Bond talks to us about changing spaces
Sue Bond
Each month we select a decorator who is highly passionate and creates innovative spaces for their clients. In June 2016, Block & Chisel chatted to South African-based decorator, Sue Bond.
Q
Why did you choose a career in interiors?
A
My background in real estate motivated my passion for changing spaces. Many years of helping sellers prepare their homes for sale and encouraging buyers to buy a 'renovators dream' made me realise design was in my blood. Creating and changing spaces to optimize what is available creates a lifestyle that can literally change the way you live your life.
Q
Do you have a specific style, what inspires you?
A
My inspiration comes from my travels. I lived in Hong Kong for four years and was exposed to design from all over the world as it is a melting pot of cultures. Georgian design is probably my real love but combined with a contemporary slant and an Asian edge. Combining these styles keeps my interiors very bespoke.
Q
What advice do you have for our clients if they wish to redecorate?
A
I would advise my Clients to be brave! Chuck out or recondition the old and bring in one or two fresh pieces to update your space. This is rejuvenating to both the home and the inhabitants - bringing in current paint colours and a few fabulous new fabrics. Stay true to your own style and don't be a follower of fashion.
Q
Tell us about your latest project?
A
My latest project is the restoration of a Town Castle in Belgium. It is 100 years old and quite magnificent! I met this Client in Hong Kong and did her apartment there for her. The fun is going to be combining her Asian collection with her classic pieces snd family heirlooms.
Q
What is your favourite piece in your home?
A
My favourite piece in my home is a very simple one! It is an old oak dining table on castors I bought from Block & Chisel - ducoed white and paired with black bamboo chairs. The contemporary paint finish has given it new life.
Q
What is your favourite piece currently available at Block & Chisel?
A
Block & Chisel have the art of throwing old, new, Asian, French and African together! Right now I am coveting the navy blue velvet couch. My next project is very blue & white so it would work just perfectly. Throw in a blue & white vase or two and a few green leaves!
Q
Share with us your simplest décor tip.
A
I have the awful title of The Scatter Cushion Queen! I love to change up a room by throwing out the tired old scatters and freshening it all up with new fabrics, feather stuffing and a gorgeous throw. This can give new life to an old sofa! Not to mention the people who sit on it...
